In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., Lorain County Metro Parks are hosting a 7-day program event, “Remember the Dream.” This event will begin on Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, January 15, and continue beyond MLK Day, ending Friday, January 22. This event will have a virtual component, online activities, and outdoor experiences for everyone to enjoy. You will find everything you need.

Fire & Ice Walk takes place on Saturday, January 30 from noon to 4 pm at Vermilion River Reservation. Cost is $7/person (per 1-hour time block). Join the festivities at Vermilion River Reservation for some wintry festive fun in the form of ice carvers and sculptures, fire pits, yummy food and a beer garden! Get decked out in your coziest and cutest hats.

Governor DeWine highlighted the vaccine distribution timeline for Phase 1B of Ohio’s vaccination program, which is set to begin next week for those ages 80 and up. Week of January 18: Vaccine providers will begin receiving their first allotment of vaccines for those ages 80 and older. Vaccines will be delivered on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Governor DeWine reemphasized the vaccine distribution timeline for Phase 1B of Ohio's vaccination program which is set to begin next week with those ages 80 and older. This week: Today, the Ohio Department of Health will receive information from the federal government on Ohio's vaccine allotment for the upcoming week. This information, including which providers will receive vaccines and how many, will be communicated to local health departments this evening.

In May of 1816 began an event that has been referred to as the “Year without Summer” in New England. Frost had killed off most of the crops that had been planted; soon most of New England was gripped by the cold front. There was widespread loss of crops with the result of regional malnutrition, starvation, and epidemic.

Vermilion Jet Skies is coming to Vermilion, Ohio, opening Memorial Day Weekend 2021. Bring your friends or family and cruise Lake Erie with their new fleet of 2021 Kawasaki STX160 Jet Skis. Jonathan Hauck, Joe McHenry and Chris Lehky of Vermilion will open the new rental business at the former location of Erie Shore Wave Runners, 655 W. River Road, which moved to Lorain.

Need to get out-of-the-house and go on an adventure in the Great wintry Outdoors? Jack Frost Treasure Hunt will take place Saturday, January 16th from 10 am to 4:30 pm at Vermilion River Reservation's Carriage Barn. If you missed the Halloween pirate treasure hunt or want to do it again, swing by Vermilion River Reservation's Carriage Barn to pick-up a Treasure Hunt map left behind by a pirate known as Jack Fearsome Frost.

Throughout the week, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine was joined by Lt. Governor Jon Husted, and provided updates on Ohio's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as other state initiatives. On Tuesday, Governor DeWine recapped Phases 1A and 1B of Ohio's vaccine distribution plan. Because the availability of the vaccine remains limited in Ohio and across the country, Ohio is taking a phased approach that prioritizes the most vulnerable citizens, those in the healthcare field, and school staff members.

“Yesterday was a sad day. It was a dark day for this great republic. This was a direct attack on the U.S. Constitution, and everything we hold dear,” said Governor DeWine. “Yesterday’s actions were shameful, and all Americans need to denounce these acts. It is time we all accept the election results, and the will of the People. We need to come together as a People, and we need to work together.”

Lester Allan Pelton (September 5, 1829 – March 14, 1908), considered to be the father of modern day hydroelectric power, is one the most famous inventors of American history. Pelton invented the impulse water turbine. Lester Pelton was born in Vermillion, Ohio in 1829. His father was a farmer. He lived on Risden Road and attended the Cuddeback School.

Vermilion, Ohio is sometimes gifted with unseasonably warm days throughout the traditional winter months, and paddlers take advantage of warmer weather to rescue their boat from storage and take it for a float down the river. If you’re that avid paddler, it is extremely important to dress appropriately in order to have fun and stay safe out on the water.

The Vermilion community mourns the loss of community advocate Karen Lynn Miller. Karen, 59, passed away on January 1, 2021, at UPMC Jameson Hospital due to COVID-19. She was a resident of Huron, OH and Pulaski Township, PA, and actively involved in promoting and preserving the town of Vermilion, OH. From 2011 to 2015 Karen owned and published a weekly online community newspaper, Vermilion Online News.
