After seven years, the Gross National Happiness USA (GNHUSA) Happiness Walk and Research Project is coming to a conclusion. GNHUSA Co-Founder and President, Paula Francis, is leading the final 3,000 miles of the Happiness walk from Salt Lake City, Utah all the way to Boston.

The Happiness Walk is a 10,000-mile walk across the country that has focused on interviewing Americans about their conception of happiness. Over 2,000 interviews have been conducted up to this point and are being analyzed by researchers at the University of Vermont to identify what contributes to societal well-being.

Results of the report will be published to support the growing literature of happiness economics, a branch of economics rooted in the well-being of individuals. These results are geared towards informing policy makers so public policy can fulfill the goal of improving subjective well-being.

“We walk because the policies and practices of our systems, institutions and our government ought to support and uphold our basic right, and that of future generations: the pursuit of happiness,” said Francis.

The Happiness Walk has discovered that, contrary to what we may hear in traditional media, we are mostly very much alike – we value the same things! And…

People have deep wisdom to share,

Most of us have a unifying vision,

Listening is as important as the answers, and

Most agree we can do better to support what we value.

Gross National Happiness USA is a grassroots, national network of advocates that work to increase economic, environmental and societal justice by conducting research, measuring what matters, educating the public and policy-makers about practical and positive frameworks for decision-making, and advocating for practices and policies that support the conditions of happiness in the United States.

If you're so inclined, the Happiness Walker invites you to walk with her to her next stop, Lorain, the following morning.
