Islam: Fundamentals And Friendship


The College Club of Vermilion and Ritter Public Library will sponsor a program titled "Islam: Fundamentals and Friendship" to be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 from 7 pm to 8:15 pm in the downstairs Community Room.

Dr. M. Jafar Mahallati, Oberlin College Presidential Scholar in Islamic Studies in the religion department and chair of Middle East and North Africa Studies, as well as the founder of the Oberlin Friendship Festival, will present a brief introduction to Islam. He will provide reading suggestions for those seeking more understanding, and share fruit of his reflection on the ethics of the friendship and its significance for peacemaking.

Dr. Mahallati has taught courses in religion, conflict resolution, and peace studies. During the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, he worked as an Iranian diplomat at the United Nations seeking peace between the two nations.

This program is open to the public. All are welcome to attend this informative program which will be preceded from 6:30 pm to 7 pm by the College Club's November Business meeting.

The College Club of Vermilion is an organization of women who have completed at least two years of college coursework or are registered nurses. Its purpose is to raise money for scholarships for graduating Vermilion High School students and to promote cultural, social, educational, and civic interest in the community.
