Mayor Forthofer is warning Vermilion residents that open burning is not permitted in the city limits.
“We live in a city folks,” stated the mayor. “Open burning in the City of Vermilion is a fourth degree misdemeanor and carries a fine. Uncontrolled burning is dangerous. It's a health hazard for your neighbors and an EPA violation. The temporary suspension of bulk collection by Republic does not make it OK. And no, whipping out a marshmallow when the police arrive does not make it OK either.”
The mayor is asking Vermilion residents to be considerate of their community.
Mayor Forthofer clarified that a contained fire pit, with clean wood, is permitted. Grills and small fire pits with clean fuel are also allowed, as long as neighbors don't complain.
